Jeff Gordon probably didn't please the people holding tickets to NASCAR's finale in Atlanta, but the engravers now know for sure who's name to put on the trophy. Jeff Gordon needed a 40th place finish or better in Sunday's ACDelco 400 at Rockingham to clinch the 1998 Winston Cup Championship. He went for it all however, and won a race dominated by Rusty Wallace and Dale Jarrett. With second place locked up by Mark Martin, the fans will need something else to watch for next Sunday. Maybe Gordon will offer them that. With twelve wins this year Gordon trails Richard Petty's mark of thirteen wins in a single season by just one, with just one race to go. Gordon has also added to Hendrick Motorsports's string of consecutive championships, bumping that number to four, with three of those belonging to Gordon. |
